James Suckling 94-95/100A juicy and fresh red with good depth of fruit, showing pretty plum and blackberry, as well as bark and mushroom. It’s medium- to full-bodied with chewy tannins that are already integrated and polished. 65% merlot, 25% cabernet franc and 10% cabernet sauvignon.
Neal Martin Vinous 88-90/100
The 2023 Certan de May was picked from September 13 to 26. As usual at this early stage, the aromatics are not convincing, and there is a shortfall in fruit concentration and complexity (especially following the 2023 Latour à Pomerol). The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins and notes of blackcurrant pastille mixed with brown spices, though it seems to taper away toward the finish. This is not bad by any means, but it seems to lack a bit of ambition given its propitious terroir.
Antonio Galloni Vinous 90-93/100
The 2023 Certan de May is a potent, dense wine that shows the more opulent side of the year. Ripe, dark-toned fruit, licorice, cloves, mocha and new leather are all amplified in this decidedly overt Pomerol. It will be interesting to see how this comes together with élevage. The oak is a bit strong today, but it works with the wine's style. This is promising.
